Government and stakeholders in the construction industry are working together to ensure that fly-by-night builders and shoddy infrastructure in the province becomes a thing of the past

Construction IndustryGovernment and stakeholders in the construction industry are working together to ensure that fly-by-night builders and shoddy infrastructure in the province becomes a thing of the past.

Public Works MEC Christian Martin spelled out the process of registration with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) at a workshop attended by about 100 interested parties in King William's Town this week.

He said all building contractors would have to register with the CIDB before they are awarded tenders by the state.

The register grades and categorises contractors according to their work and financial capability. The register benefits both the contractor and the client by providing track records of individual contractor's capacity and capabilities.

"This will enable the clients to match projects with a contractor's capabilities," said Martin.

Registration deadlines are August 15 for provincial departments and November 14 this year for municipalities.
