This R104 million project was commissioned for the Western Cape Department of Health in November 2014. A number of on-site contractual matters had to be resolved before the facility could be completed. DTPW apologises for the delay.

When it opens next year, the centre will provide services from 07:30 to 16:30 for to up to 750 patients a day from Salt River, Woodstock, Vredehoek and central Cape Town, including the beneficiaries of the redevelopment of District Six. The pharmacy will have extended opening hours.

The facility will boast specialised units for chronic disease, infectious disease, woman and child health, radiology, emergency treatment, oral health, and rehabilitation. The design incorporates a number of green features, including energy-saving lights and motion sensors that switch off lights that are not needed.

Natural ventilation and lighting will supplement mechanical ventilation and electric lighting. Rainwater will be harvested to flush toilets and to supplement the supply of water for fire-fighting purposes. These features help to give effect to the Western Cape Government’s 110% Green initiative.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term local Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. During the course of this project, R2 million was spent on local labour from the City of Cape Town municipal area, and 40 training opportunities were created. In addition, R6 million was spent on targeted enterprises.
