Two of the canals which will provide watercraft access between the V&A
Waterfront and the Cape Town International Convention Centre are currently
on schedule according to the contractor, WBHO which is in a joint venture
with Rainbow Construction.
The JV is working on the Gateway canal, which involves the construction of a
canal between the entrance to the waterfront and the residential area of the
waterfront. The second contract is for the construction of the Upper Basin
canal which extends the residential canal and will eventually link the
canals and the upper basin by means of a lock.
The Gateway canal is to be flooded at the end of July. The Upper Basin canal
will be completed towards the end of the year and is currently in the early
phase of construction.
The combined value of the two contracts is R23 million and involves the
construction by the WBHO/Rainbow JV of the canal walls, a vehicular access
bridge over the Gateway canal and a smaller pedestrian bridge over the Upper
Basin canal. The walls are cast in eight metre sections. Extensive bulk
earthworks were involved totalling some 30 000m3 of which approx. 15 000m3
was rock. This called for blasting which had to be carried out with extreme
care following stringent controls to avoid damage to nearby buildings and
inconvenience to busy traffic entering and leaving the waterfront.
Earlier the WBHO/Rainbow joint venture completed the construction of the
Cape Town International Convention Centre, at a total value of R560 million.
The JV is currently constructing the interlinking ArabellaSheraton Hotel
which is scheduled for completion in August 2003.
