Phase one of a multi-million rand upgrade to turn Tiffindell, South Africa’s only ski resort, into an all-year family holiday destination will now start in September

Phase one of a multi-million rand upgrade to turn Tiffindell, South Africa’s only ski resort, into an all-year family holiday destination will now start in September.

The R400 million expansion plan for this ski resort, which is near the mountainous hamlet of Rhodes, was initially scheduled to start in January.

Tiffindell Ski South Africa, the previous owners of the resort, sold their interest to TiffSki Property Investment Pty (Ltd) in June last year for an undisclosed amount.

Phase 1 of the development, which includes new accommodation for approximately 250 people, will now begin on September 15, said David Taylor, chief executive of TiffSki.

In the meantime, they are demolishing some of the older facilities and upgrading some rooms and facilities for the season which starts on May 22. They had also employed one of the world’s top ski instructors – as well as top South African chefs and bar staff.

Taylor said this would ensure that “the resort will have an excellent season and every one of our clients will be fully satisfied”.

Taylor and Lance Cuyer, TiffSki’s general manager, visited the area on March 2. Cuyer said they planned to make this season one of the more successful the resort has ever experienced, with new ski slopes being added.

“Now the ski lift will go up to the top of the mountain,” he said. “We have upgraded our accommodation and cuisine. A new dining room and bar is currently being added. Our medical centre has been upgraded, with a helicopter on standby to fly in and out if needed.”

Taylor said the developments will provide exclusive, luxury accommodation with a fractional hotel, restaurants, a cigar bar and cafés, a spa and wellness centre, a conference centre and a gym, as well as an ice rink.

Additional slopes will see Tiffindell boast 10km of ski runs with substantial chair-lifts. Adventure sports, including extreme sports, will be introduced to make Tiffindell an all- year-round family holiday resort.

According to Taylor, Tiffindell aims to capture a large share of the 80000 to 100000 South Africans who make annual overseas trips to ski resorts.

Resort manager Maarten den Heyer said 120 people are already employed for the current upgrading. - By TIM AND SHARON SALMON
