COMMERCIAL property analysis company IPD has launched an index that measures a building’s environmental performance.

IPD developed the environment code supported by international firms Barclays, Bureau Veritas and CB Richard Ellis.

Corporate property accounts for 20percent of the world’s carbon emissions, according to IPD.

Company director Christopher Hedley said the code would help in the fight against climate change.

He said buildings are a leading source of environmental damage, but most organisations need help in measuring the impact.

“Not only does the code enable users to compare the environmental performance of their buildings; they can now do this against peer organisations anywhere in the world,” said Hedley.

Anthony Hyde, Bureau Veritas’s managing director of health, safety and environment, said the company had over six months helped IPD to review existing environmental best practices to develop a clear set of measures for a building’s environmental performance.
