IN JUST over two weeks, East London’s newest R120 million shopping centre, the King’s Mall, will unofficially open some of its shop doors to Gonubie residents.

Hanrich du Plessis of MDSA Project Management, the company in charge of tenant co-ordination, said most shops in the mall were ready to open their doors by as early as March 18.

The 3000m² SuperSpar, the centre’s anchor tenant, is among those ready to start doing business next month. However, a few other tenants, like Clicks and Standard Bank, will only commence operations at a later stage as they are still finalising shopfitting arrangements.

Du Plessis said they have been given up to 60 days to complete the work of kitting out shops. An official opening date will only be confirmed once all the shops have opened for business at the mall.

Andrew Venter, of construction company WBHO, said the official opening was likely to only take place in May. According to Du Plessis, all building work is on track and work on the parking lot as well as outside the mall should be completed by March 14.

The mall, which is a project of Edrei Investments, will boast a total of 47 shops and 337 lock-up storage units below ground level.

There are a variety of different services on offer ranging from restaurants to clothing stores, a cellphone franchise and hair and beauty stores. Among them are a Dros restaurant, an upmarket deli, Baron’s Select, Sotheby’s, Hair by Hannah, Execuspecs and an Intercare medical and dental centre. Curves, a gym for women, is also due to open at the mall. -By CHERI-ANN JAMES
