Hermans & Roman Property Investment No. 1 (Pty) Ltd is the company’s wealth creation vehicle, which benefited from the recent sale of the Welkom Liberty Mall Shopping Centre for R160-million and in the process created wealth for the staff trust.
Constance Mashiya who has been employed as Hermans & Roman’s tea lady since its inception in 2002, received a payout three times her monthly salary. “I am amazed at what this company has done for me and it feels good to be rewarded for your loyalty,” she says. “It makes you want to renew your commitment to the company.”
“The payout comes at an opportune time, when interest rates and food prices are on the increase, creating financial pressures within South African households,” says Kevin Roman, group CEO of Hermans & Roman. “The payouts help to ease these financial pressures, as well as provide a means of wealth creation for our employees. Wealth creation is key to alleviating the economic inequalities still prevalent in South Africa.”
The trust’s payouts are calculated using a formula which takes into account the number of months a staff member has been employed at Hermans & Roman. The combined number of months of staff who benefited from the payout totals 2 239.
“Hermans & Roman is a people-focused organisation where staff are treated as assets,” says Roman. “This initiative allows us to show staff members our tremendous respect and appreciation for their valuable contribution and commitment to the continued quality and growth of the company.”
Tony Stokes, Hermans & Roman’s national human resources manager, adds, “The company nurtures a working environment of respect, teamwork and diversity where staff are valued for their contribution. This strategy and philosophy enables us to attract and retain high-quality talent – a critical component to ensure that we achieve our strategic goals.”
