Inner-city residents have called for an urgent meeting with Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo to discuss the city's housing plan before a final blueprint on Johannesburg's development over the next few years is released in July.

Amos MasondoA summit was held last weekend by city officials, business, property owners and inner-city residents to review and give input on a draft Inner-City Regeneration Charter covering all aspects of development from waste management, transport, housing, economic and social development to informal trading and security.

Housing was by far the most volatile issue at the summit, with residents saying they had not been asked to contribute to the draft charter, which failed to cater for the tens of thousands of inner-city residents.

Edmund Elias, representing the People's Summit Initiative, made up of 12 civil society organisations, including the South African Council of Churches, the Ecumenical Service for Socio Economic Transformation (Esset), the Inner-City Forum and South African National Traders Retail Alliance, said on Tuesday that the charter made no provision for housing subsidies for inner-city residents, only for developers.

He said the People's Summit had requested an urgent meeting with the mayor to discuss holding housing workshops.
