Major new infrastructure projects including the construction of five bridges have been completed at Century City at a cost of R60m in recent months.
These projects form part of a two-year, R310m rollout of infrastructure to support new commercial and residential developments totaling in excess of R4billion recently completed or underway at Century City. Four of the new bridges – two vehicular and two pedestrian – provide access to the landmark KnightsBridge luxury apartment towers now nearing completion on a private island and wharf close to Canal Walk shopping centre.
The fifth bridge has been constructed over another section of the canal system as part of the completion of Century Boulevard, the inner ring road of the 250 hectare city.
Mark Bezencon, the development manager overseeing all infrastructure projects for the developers, the Rabie Property Group, said work on three additional bridges – one vehicular and two pedestrian – would begin shortly with completion set for next year.
Other roads recently constructed include the addition of a second Cape Town bound lane feeding onto the N1 from the Sable Road interchange and the creation of a fourth entrance to Century City including the installation of a second new traffic signalised intersection on Ratanga Road.
Also under construction are the upgrade to the Bosmansdam/Montague Drive intersection, the dueling of Ratanga Road from Shayele to Bosmansdam and a complete upgrade of the Bosmansdam, Ratanga and Omarumba intersection.
The canal system at Century City is also being extended by 1,5km with the last section of the canal currently under construction with completion set for April next year.
Traffic calming measures on Century Boulevard as well as the construction of extensive pedestrian routes around Century City are to be constructed shortly as is the completion of another internal road, North bank Lane and the formalizing of the pedestrian link between the public transport interchange and canal walk.
Also to be built early next year is a formal bus stop facility at the Montague Drive gateway to Century City.
Commercial developments recently completed or now under construction and supported by this infrastructure include Daimler Chrysler’s new brand campus providing Mercedes Benz and Chrysler Jeep Lifestyle Centres, the 15 500 square metre Waterview Park office block development; the 40 000 square metre Century Gate Business Park; the 19 000 square metre new regional offices for Liberty Life, the 10 000 square metre Knowledge Park phase two office block, the 5800 square metre Boulevard Square; the 11 000 square metre Colosseum mixed use development and the 35 000 square metre Estuaries Office Park where the first buildings are already under construction.
Work on five additional commercial projects – four office blocks totaling 26 000 square metres and a 4000 square metre gymnasium - are due to start shortly.
Also benefiting from the new infrastructure are residential developments currently under construction including the Bougain Villas, the Oasis Luxury Retirement Resort, and KnightsBridge while two further residential projects bringing an additional 500 front doors to Century City are to be launched within the next six months.
