Work has begun on a R88 million expansion of parking facilities at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Pretoria.

Work has begun on a R88 million expansion of parking facilities at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Pretoria.

The expansion which will add another 1 750 covered bays over 63 000m² of space is due for completion late in May 2007, says Brent Wiltshire, development executive of Old Mutual Property Group.

“With the success of Menlyn Park, the customer experience needs to be enhanced by additional parking, “he says. “Menlyn Park continues to attract an increasing number of visitors and recorded parking traffic of 6,6 million vehicles in 2005, the highest among the major retail centres in the Old Mutual portfolio.  It is also clear that if the centre is to be enhanced, there must be adequate parking.

“Major road improvements for the area, with new on- and off- ramps from the highway, are being planned. These will potentially involve a reconfiguration of entrances into Menlyn Park. Positioning additional parking in an appropriate location on site will facilitate traffic flows. “

The parking expansion is on the southern side of the property, and involves extensions over six levels, with new entrances and exits and two additional lifts.  There will be 6 976 bays at Menlyn Park after the extensions.

The last major expansion at Menlyn Park – a R850 million project which virtually doubled retail space – was completed five years ago.
