Since establishing their Franschhoek and Stellenbosch offices less than a year ago Sotheby’s International Realty have cranked up over R130 million in sales in the Winelands area alone.

Billy Lascaris of Sotheby’s International Realty, Winelands says, “This month alone we have already done R22 million in sales, and the month isn’t over.

“We put our success down to the quality of our agents, many of who joined us after having worked in the area for years, building up strong networks, coupled with our strong brand, synonymous worldwide with wealth creation, quality and excellent service.

“On the outskirts of the village, where properties are larger and many wine and fruit producing farms are to be found, we recently sold a 71 hectare estate for around R30-million, the second highest price ever recorded in the area.

Lascaris says traditional country homes are in short supply in the area because, no matter how much money is to be made from the selling such a property, owners are reluctant to leave this part of the world and even more unwilling to sell their heirloom properties which have generally been in these families for generations.

“Demand for these properties is further fuelled by trendy, high flyers who are becoming increasingly attracted to the sophisticated country lifestyle. Many are trading in their city lofts and townhouses and looking for homes in places like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

“We’ve seen a huge shift in those choosing to buy and live in the Winelands. A few years ago you would have seen more retirees but now, in addition there are many younger families moving into the area who are attracted by safe outdoor living and excellent private schools, along with world class hotels and restaurants.
