The whitewashed building at the corner of St Thomas and Musgrave roads in Durban must be one of the most recycled dining establishments in the city.

In the past three years it has changed hands four times, and the latest occupant is the Vestige Bistro and Bar.

Modern and minimalist, the venue has the added benefit of a pavement-facing portico, which can get a little noisy during peak-hour traffic.

It has always had a welcoming appeal, and that hasn't changed. And the menu is fresh and enticing.

The beef fillet wrap got the thumbs-up from me, and the grilled chicken salad pleased my companion.

With a glass of white wine and a cranberry smoothie between us, the meal, at R106, was light and affordable on a public holiday.
