THE first phase of a R140m retail centre called The Crossing in Mafikeng, North West, has been officially launched, say developers McCreedy Friedlander.

Property-Housing-ResidentialMcCreedy Friedlander MD Mark McCreedy says the first phase of the centre consists of 18500m² of retail space.

The anchor tenants are Pick ’n Pay Family, which occupies 2700m², and Woolworths, with 1600m². Woolworths also provides a Food Hall store. Other national tenants include the Foschini group, Ackermans, Pep Stores, Discom, Dunns, Vodacom and First National Bank.

McCreedy says talks are in progress with a substantial national tenant for phase two, which consists of an additional 8000m² of retail space.

Lance Milton, the company director responsible for letting, says 80% of the centre has been leased to national tenants.

Milton says Mafikeng was in need of a shopping centre catering for all income groups in the Mafikeng and Mmabatho areas, as a large percentage of residents in these areas were forced to go to Klerksdorp, Rustenburg and Potchefstroom to shop.

The Crossing is on the corner of Nelson Mandela Drive and Sekame Drive, about 10km from the Botswana border. McCreedy Friedlander says surveys show about 250000 cars cross the border each month as people take advantage of the favourable exchange rate.
