It's like nothing before it, say the developers of Sable Square,
a 37 000 sq/m highly versatile retail development on Bosmansdam and Ratanga Roads, Milnerton, focusing as it does, on a village square and high street experience of shopping, working, eating, living and leisure.

Moving about as far as one can go away from the shopping mall retailing concept, Sable Square will feature open air thoroughfares and a big busy square reminiscent of those in countries throughout the world, where natural light and sunshine are celebrated.

'There's no attempt to theme this development, it draws its excitement from highly individual architecture, landscaping and textures, and of course the variety of retailers and services we are attracting,' says Anthony Wolpert, Development Manager of Spearhead Property Group.

Spearhead and a consortium of investors have spent months refining the concept of Sable Square, exploring the limits of its versatility in terms of its position and target market.

'As with Century City which it neighbours, we are finding that there is virtually no end to the possibilities.  Things we did not think feasible at the beginning are proving to be the cornerstones of the development,' said Jonty De La Porte of DLP which is marketing Sable Square.

As a result Cape Town's famous shopping and leisuretime fanatics are expected to migrate from their traditional hunting grounds in the Southern Suburbs, Atlantic Seaboard and Northern Areas to explore the rich pickings of the widely divergent retail species at Sable Square.

In response to this diversity, architects Bentel Associates International have designed the development in a variety of what senior partner Jannie Meyer calls addresses or precincts reflecting the mood and function of the traders.  'The development can be conjured in key words like variety, accessibility, fresh, air, shade, outdoor, convenience and texture.  We will concentrate on beautiful soft and hard landscaping with lush planting on the perimeter, and the entire development will be on a friendly human scale that we have factored into the architecture.'

Aside from the expected high-end retail operators the venture also affords smaller traders and professionals an opportunity to participate in the vigorous development in the area round Sable Square.  As little as 10 square metres of retail space will be available.
