South African engineering group Bateman has won an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the design, supply and erection of a power plant in Kazakhstan.

The $190-imillion contract, which is due to commence in March and is scheduled for completion and handover in June 2007, was awarded by AGIP KCO, the operator for the Offshore Kazakhstan International Operating Company.

AGIP KCO is an international consortium of leading oil companies, comprising AGIP, Total Fina Elf, Exxon Mobil, Shell, BG, Phillips Petroleum and Inpex.

The project will establish a 270 MW power generation plant on the greenfields Eskene West site, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, approximately 45 km north-east of Atyrau in Kazakhstan.

The contract includes the main power and emergency electric generation facilities and the steam turbine building, as well as all civil works, project management, obtaining of permits and certification and the construction of contractors’ camps. The company also won an option to extend the project to a 320 MW facility.
