Multi-disciplinary construction company Group Five reported yesterday that it has started the year with a spate of international and local contracts.

Construction IndustryMulti-disciplinary construction company Group Five reported yesterday that it has started the year with a spate of international and local contracts valued at R400-million, of which are located on various Indian Ocean Islands, Ghana and South Africa.

This includes the company’s third international bank contract since September 2002, a $30,5-million contract for a Bank of Tanzania branch in Zanzibar, which was awarded during work on the bank’s branches in Dar-es-Salaam.

This was followed by a R300-million contract in November 2003, as a joint venture with General Construction, for the Bank of Mauritius in Port Louis.

Since 1998, Group Five has been working at the Tarkwa Gold Mine in Ghana, West Africa, where Phase 4 began in January 2004.

This comprises structural steel erection, platework and mechanical installations as well as the supply and installation of plant and overland piping.

Locally, the group’s building operation has started on a variety of contracts that include a shopping centre in Sunninghill, Sandton; a new head office for Voith Turbo South Africa in Boksburg, single accommodation for Sasol employees in Secunda, as well as a new Road Lodge in Rustenburg.

Another development in Sandton is the Katherine Quay luxury apartment complex, which is valued at R43-million, comprising 78 luxury units including basement parking.

Meanwhile, orders for large diameter steel pipes valued at R10-million have apparently poured in to Group Five Pipe in Meyerton.

The pipes, which were ordered by the City Council of Pretoria and Rand Water, will use a total of 1 500 t of steel to manufacture, keeping one of the two spirally welded pipe milling machines at the factory working full steam for the next few months.
