Perceptions about Cape Town's central city regarding security and leanliness has shown a turnaround over the past two years, according to an user survey released by the Cape Town Partnership.

More than 500 people were interviewed throughout the central business district, including business leaders, office workers, shop owners, commuters, informal traders and tourists. The survey was conducted by Roots Research during January and early February this year.

Two years ago, only 16.7% of those surveyed said they regarded security in the city as acceptable while this year more than 52% felt the level of security was acceptable.

In the case of business opinion, the figure has leapt from 9% in 2000 to 62% in 2002.

Only 10.6% of the business respondents said security was unacceptable in the central city, against 75.4% in 2000.

Positive perceptions of cleanliness in the city virtually doubled, with 19% in 2000 saying the state of cleanliness

was acceptable, compared to 34.8% in 2002.

In the case of business opinion, 6.8% rated the cleanliness as good in 2000, while in 2002 this figure jumped to 39%.

The Cape Town Partnership's chief executive, Michael Farr, said the positive turnaround in perception was testament to the hard work of business, local government and ratepayers who, together, had formulated plans and acted upon them after the first user survey in 2000 was analysed.
