Do smaller retailers subsidise the rentals of their "bigger brothers" in shopping centres? Is there a monopolisation of shopping centres?
These are some of the issues to be debated at the 8th African Congress of Shopping Centres on October 12 to 14 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Managing director, Doug Parker will set the scene when he opens with "The Great Debate". Douglas Parker and Associates will speak on "Retail and Shopping Centre Performance Uncovered".
This will be followed by Marcel Joubert, chairperson of SA Council of Retailers and managing director of the Platinum Group, who has been quoted in the media as saying, "The cornerstone of the issue is the significant monopolised concentration of shopping mall ownership, with only six to ten shopping centre owners in South Africa."
On a theme of "Reinventing Retail Relationships", the congress will seek to provide an understanding of the retail and property market, the people and the brands, and dynamics within which they operate.
It will be addressed by the major players, such as Whitey Basson of Shoprite and Brian Beavon of Spar, and will also take a look at the newer success stories, such as Loads of Living and Primi Piatti.
In keeping with international trends, it will introduce overseas speakers.
