Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is looking for R600-million to develop its maritime and architecture divisions and add student accommodation. The second phase of NMMU’s R1-billion infrastructure rollout is expected to finish by year-end.
NMMU deputy vice-chancellor of student affairs Sibongile Muthwa said the institution was gearing up to enter phase three of its infrastructure development programme. It had applied for a R600-million grant from the Department of Higher Education and Training. Among projects in the pipeline was the construction of a new R240-million residence, she said. Funding would also go towards a new architecture building and a maritime studies institution.
She said the university would know by the end of the year if it would be given the go-ahead. NMMU has formed strategic partnerships with Transnet Port Authority as it seeks to take over the CSIR facility in Summerstrand.
It hopes to turn the facility into a maritime institute at the forefront of research and development when a portion of Transnet’s port at the harbour moves to Coega.
