Sandton City Shopping Centre issues statement to address ceiling collapse

The ceiling collapsed on the walkway between Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square on 3 June, injuring one customer.

The area was closed off for the rest of the day and reopened the next day leading to a public outcry about safety in the shopping centre post the collapse.

Julie Hillary, General Manager of Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, released a statement via facebook which reads as follows:

Sandton City would like to assure the public that the customer injured when some ceiling boards collapsed at the centre on Wednesday, 3 June has been receiving the best medical care. A member of Sandton City Centre Management has visited the customer in hospital and is in daily contact with her family. Sandton City Centre Management will continue to offer support to the customer and her family.

Engineers certified that the area was safe for use by the public and the walkway was reopened on Thursday, 4 June. Further investigations are still underway, the results of which will be released in due course.

This incident is receiving our full and urgent attention as our customers’ wellbeing is always of the utmost importance to us.
