The former grande dame of Johannesburg hotels is set to open its doors as the Four Seasons Westcliff in December after a complete facelift

Four Seasons Westcliff

The good news is that it already has several bookings and at least one wedding reservation squeezed in at the end of the year since its phone lines were opened for reservations a week ago.

The Westcliff, perched among mining mansions in one of Johannesburg's elite suburbs, was renowned for its husky salmon pink look and as a destination for the rich and famous.

Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt and Margaret Thatcher have all spent nights there. The hotel's presidential suite, which has also been upgraded, has played home-in-transit to celebs such as Jane Fonda, John Travolta, Will Smith, Richard Branson and the Dalai Lama.

The makeover, which started last June, was expected to cost about R200-million. All rooms were redone, and the new decor looks set to become edgier with an extensive collection of contemporary African art.

The significance of the overhaul is more than just simply a new hotel opening its doors. It represents the Four Season group's first foray into SA, and sets the stage for a battle with the Marriott group, which recently bought the Protea Hotel group.

"The real difference guests will notice is something they will feel rather than see, and that's the caring, personal service for which Four Seasons is renowned," says Christopher Rudolph, who will manage the hotel.  There are 117 guest rooms and suites with five new restaurants and lounges.
