Cape Town - The Cape Town Convention Bureau has confirmed that some R231m worth of business has been secured for Cape Town and the Western Cape between now and 2010.

The figure excludes any conferences or conventions that are still being bid for, and any that have been booked independently and not through the bureau's offices.

Conferences which have already been won by Cape Town amounted to some R231.6m, bureau CEO Rick Taylor said on Monday.

This meant that more than 34 000 convention delegates would spend a total of 136 000 bed nights in Cape Town between now and 2010.

Taylor said conferences for which confirmation was still being awaited amounted to an additional R199m.

"The economic impact has been worked out using the number of delegates, the number of days they spend on conference and the average spend of each delegate while they're here in the Mother City," Taylor said.

The Cape Town International Convention Centre opens on July 1.
