The R90-million transformation of the Randburg Waterfront into The
Brightwater Commons is well under way.
Phase One, now in progress, involves the re-treatment of all the
facades, roofscapes and walkways; the draining of the dam - to be
refilled with soil - and the creation of an underground culvert.
Final landscaping and cutting-in of The Brightwater Commons' new,
smaller water features are scheduled for completion by the end of
October, this year.
The relocation of the current market area into
the central area and the addition of a new retail zone will be
completed by Easter 2004.
Cheryl Adamson, marketing consultant to The Brightwater Commons, says
the need for the change was sparked by major driving forces.
"These include increasing retail competition in the entertainment
industry, mall monotony - the public perception that all malls look
the same - and the demand for improved amenities that support
lifestyle requirements.
"At The Brightwater Commons, we will be returning to the concept of
'street life', a pedestrian-friendly complex where shoppers can
connect with like-minded people, or relax on the green with its
attractive water features before and after shopping chores."
The transformation of the Randburg Waterfront will call for the
replacement of the vast expanse of water with a "smaller, softer body
of water that tumbles into a bubbling brook or pool," Adamson said.
Where once there was a dam, there will now be a manicured lawn where
family activities such as concerts or picnics can be enjoyed, as well
as an adjacent promotions court for entertainment events.
To add to the ambience, colourful canopies will decorate shopping
fronts and tenants encouraged to extend their marketing to the
walkways outside their stores.
The refurbishment is a joint venture between Landmark Studios and
Frame International Architects and Designers.
