Malcolm Horne appointed Broll CEO

Taking charge of South Arica’s largest independent property service provider, Broll Property Group, experienced property specialist Malcolm Horne has been appointed CEO by the company’s shareholders

Malcolm HorneExecutive Chairman of Broll, Jonathan Broll, says: “Horne’s appointment to the top operational position within the group recognises his leadership and the significant contribution he has made to Broll on all fronts.”

Employing 1,000 skilled property practitioners, Broll manages a R62 billion property portfolio which comprises some 14,000 leases over premises for a diversity of leading national and multi-national companies. Broll is part of the international CB Richard Ellis network.

Contributing to Broll’s success, Horne’s vast property expertise has been gathered over some 18 years in the industry:

He joined Broll in 2003 with a wealth of property experience and was appointed Managing Director of the Property Management division in 2007. Horne also served as CEO of Akhona Broll Properties and MD of Broll Namibia. Prior to this, he gained vast experience as Executive Manager of Properties for Joint Municipal Pension Fund, Senior Property Manager for City Property Administration and as Property Portfolio Manager for BSA Property Managers.

Broll’s senior executive team now comprises Broll, Horne and Chief Operating Officer Leonard Michau. “We believe that this structure is ideal for the efficient and focused leadership of the group for the future,” says Broll.

Broll is a multi-disciplinary property services company with over 35 years experience in the property industry.  Its services include property, shopping centre, facilities management as well as sales, leasing, valuations, retail consultancy, corporate real estate advisory services, research and investment services to the retail, commercial, industrial and investment markets.

Horne - who read for a BA Law at the University of South Africa and began his working career as a public prosecutor - is eager to take up his new position at what he believes is a hugely exciting time for the property sector, both in South Africa and on the African continent.

“The property industry is only now beginning to gradually recover from a highly challenging period as a result of the global financial crisis and the recent recession,” explains Horne. “We anticipate increasing levels activity in the property market in terms of leasing transactions, redevelopments and with limited new developments.”

Horne notes that the demand for property development, management and associated skills is still in its infancy on the African continent, with many new prospects being driven from South Africa.
