A NEW multimillion-rand hotel draped in designer prints, splashes of colour and whacky furniture is set to roll out its red carpet to well heeled Cape Town guests next year.

Italian fashion giant Missoni has announced that it plans to open a 150-room hotel in the Mother City in time to host World Cup revellers next year. Each room in the ultra-chic hotel will be fitted with furniture and fabrics worth R2-million.

“The hotel was not built for the soccer World Cup. But it’s the icing on the cake that we will open before the football,” said Andrew McLachlan, vice-president of business development for the Rezidor Hotel Group, which partnered Missoni on the project.

The hotel will feature a restaurant specialising in Italian food, a bar with a resident DJ, and a rooftop terrace with an infinity swimming pool overlooking Table Mountain.

Brand ambassadors for Missoni have ranged from model Kate Moss to actress Drew Barrymore. The label is known for its signature wavy, colourful knits set against monochrome prints.

The first Hotel Missoni opened its doors in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, last week. The hotel — with its scented passages and boldly coloured rooms, each with an espresso machine and health bar — created a stir in the hospitality fraternity. And now similar hotels are being constructed in Kuwait and Oman in the Middle East, and in South Africa.

McLachlan said: “Cape Town has in recent years become one of the most popular locations for fashion photography, and for commercial and film productions. Furthermore, the entertainment industry, together with the tourism industry, has become the fastest growing and most successful industry in the Western Cape, so we believe the city and the market are ready for a brand like Hotel Missoni.”
