With the government set to push ahead with tolling in Gauteng in July and a new fight looming in the Western Cape, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has announced plans to build another five toll roads across South Africa.

South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) boss Nazir Alli says it is important for the country to keep investing in the upgrading and maintenance of its road infrastructure to pave the way for economic growth and development.

New overheads for motorists

In a move that could signal the end of toll booths in SA, government is poised to introduce the first of a new scheme, open road tolling.

A proposal by the Gauteng Superhighways Consortium to extend the Ben Schoeman Highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria has been put on hold by the National Roads Agency while more studies are undertaken to determine the feasibility of some of the routes.
