Providing sufficient office space for the government at Bhisho would cost some R500m
Providing sufficient office space for the government at Bhisho would cost some R500-million, Public Works MEC Christian Martin told a media briefing at Bhisho.

He said this week the new 6 000m? block for the Office of the Premier would cost between R35-million and R40-million.

Martin said a public-private partnership had been registered with Treasury and his department was looking at designs. He explained the construction was part of the Bhisho-King William's Town development plan that was one of the key focus areas of the economic growth and infrastructure cluster of the provincial government.

Martin said the department was also looking at franchises within the corridor to drive development while a sports academy and community hall to mark the Bhisho Massacre were also under consideration.

With regards to the 242 government properties considered for sale, the MEC said that it had been decided to go ahead with the disposal of 85 "dilapidated" properties. Those not included in the sell-off were those at Hamburg.

Martin said at this stage it was not possible to provide an accurate assessment of what the properties were worth.

With regard to the disposal of some 2 100 properties owned by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, this should start before the end of the current financial year.
