St George's Preparatory, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, has acquired new land in its bid to grow the school's facilities.

Jonathan LissThe Park Drive school has acquired property behind its existing building that will be used either for tennis courts or an indoor swimming pool and sports fields. In addition, the school recently opened another new sports field, to be known as the Daverin field.

The school's sporting focus will also see the under-13 A cricket team undertaking St George's first sports tour to the United Kingdom in June, 2007.

St George's already has strong ties to UK-based schools' through its exchange programmes with Northcote Lodge in London and Taverham Hall in Norwich.

The exchange programme results in seven English pupils spending a month at St George's Preparatory. In return English families host seven pupils from St George's.

Headmaster of St George's Preparatory Jonathan Liss says that academic development will continue to play a pivotal role in the schools development alongside the sporting focus.

He said: "Our students have done very well academically especially in science and maths. Over the past few years our pupils have achieved good results in the World Maths Olympiad. Last year, in the national competition, one of our Grade 7 students Tamzyn Huisamen was placed first out of 14,000 pupils."

Attributing some of the school's success to previous headmaster of the St Georges Preparatory, Jan Immelman, Liss said: "Immelman was headmaster of the school for 22 years and built the school up number-wise to what it is today. During his time at the school, the jubilee block of classrooms was added, the school hall was built, and a music school was initiated as was the pre-primary school. He was also instrumental in the founding of St George's College."

Last year when Immelman retired, the school named its hall the Jan Immelman Hall in tribute to the long-serving headmaster.
