Johannesburg - The Housing Department and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will jointly host Municipal Housing Indaba in Johannesburg tomorrow.

Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg and Chairperson of SALGA, Mayor Amos Masondo are expected to address the Indaba.

The Housing department says the Indaba is aimed at strengthening the capacity of municipalities to deliver houses.

“The Indaba will seek to find solutions to challenges that negatively affects the rapid delivery of houses in various municipalities.”

“These also include lack of project management, technical and financial skills,” said the department.

The Indaba will also discuss progress on accreditation of municipalities to build houses, integrated planning for sustainable human settlements, co-operative governance, building the capacity of all spheres of government for rapid housing delivery and reporting requirements.

Housing Department spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya told BuaNews that the Indaba would also look at ways of increasing housing delivery throughout the country.

“Our goal is to increase the housing delivery capacity by 12 percent, to ensure that we also get rid of shacks,” he said.

“We have already identified problems, we now need to come up with solutions to these problems.”

The Indaba is expected to be attended by delegates from various municipalities, government officials and stakeholders in the housing delivery chain.
