The words "student accommodation" usually conjure up visions of sterile sky-rises patrolled by sharp-eyed wardens or rancid-smelling communes festooned with laundry and last night's take-aways. Finding stylish and secure student accommodation in the greater Cape Town area is like looking for parking at an international test match - next to impossible. New Property Ventures, property development specialists, are set to change the standards of student living as they launch their latest project, "The Sphere".
The Sphere, is a residential development of custom designed student apartments which will create a first-of-its-kind, multi-dimensional lifestyle hub, within the existing Stadium-on-Main complex in central Claremont. Positioned in the heart of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, the scheme will offer 90 semi-furnished, serviced apartments, produced exclusively for full-time student living.
Ideally located within easy access to all of the city's major educational institutions, residents will also have access to 24-hour Internet facilities, 24-hour secure parking and some of the most breathtaking views Cape Town has to offer. The Planet Fitness Gym and Health Club and Action Cricket are just some of the lifestyle facilities already operating from within the Stadium-on-Main building, while plans are in motion for the building to become the area's scheduled stop for UCT's door-to-door shuttle service.
Chris Drummond, Chairman of New Property Ventures, says that The Sphere was a concept ripe for development. Cape Town's leading universities, colleges and technikons draw thousands of national and international students to the city each year. Quality accommodation in the city is notoriously scarce, and learners and parents alike are increasingly security conscious. Drummond explains further, "Official student residences and the ubiquitous 'dodgy student digs' are often the only options available to the young people who flock here each year. Residences fill up quickly, while homeowners and developers are often reluctant to rent to people in full-time education. The opportunity to leverage a mixed use building like Stadium-on-Main as a lifestyle hub exclusive to students, with potentially huge investment returns for buyers, was a natural and obvious choice and just too good to miss."
Designed by field leaders, dhk Architects and dhk Interior Design, each of The Sphere's ergonomically planned units will boast a fitted kitchen, fridge, purpose built study area and semi-furnished living space. Marc Piotrowski, of dhk Interior Design, described the project as a combination of the funky and functional while explaining the distinctive design, "The trendy finishes and modern fittings will complete each individual apartment, while the customized areas will cater to a student's every need." A world-class security system, including a concierge and access control will ensure the safety of the residents and building alike.
The unique project builds on New Property Ventures' already impressive reputation for sought after, successful developments. Founded in 1991 by Drummond, the company boasts a substantial commercial property portfolio together with various lifestyle developments. Today, in partnership with Mike Nixon, the group features owned assets under management in excess of R250m. Although internationally active, New Property Ventures is geographically concentrated and firmly entrenched in the Western Cape; a region the company believes holds strong investment potential.
The Sphere is in close proximity to many entertainment attractions, including Cavendish Square Shopping centre, world-renowned sports stadiums, movie cinemas and a bustling nightlife area, making it an excellent investment for potential buyers. And, with Newlands Cricket Ground just around the corner, there will even be parking for the next international test match.
