Building contractors should play a more meaningful role in the design of new projects

Gaye Le RouxBuilding contractors should play a more meaningful role in the design of new projects to safeguard safety and health on site, said Professor Gaye le Roux, former head of the Department of Quantity Surveying at the University of Port Elizabeth.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Gauteng Master Builders Association recently, Le Roux said input from contractors was vital. "Project and construction managers are custodians of health and safety on site, and should oppose design specifications that could endanger health and safety. If this is overlooked, accidents in the sector will increase."

Le Roux said the design professions were apathetic about health and safety provisions and conspicuous by their absence at workshops dealing with these topics.

Past president Charles Hattingh said because of a slump in the industry, contractors were bullied into fast-track projects, compromising safety.
