Major resort planned

THE developers of the 177ha land tract known as the Knysna River reserve, on the western side of the Knysna River, are planning to establish a major resort.

Peter Kohler and Greg Metzer, spokesmen for the developers, have organised a series of roadshows to explain their proposals. They have now abandoned their original scheme which, although it finally received full approval for about 155 structures, was considered no longer appropriate or viable. Instead, the developers have opted for a major pleasure resort.

They say the big advantage of this is that it will attract more people to Knysna and provide permanent employment for 950 staff. Kohler and Metzer say projected turnover once the project is complete will be in the region of R155m a year.

The chief components of the new plan will be a five-star boutique hotel with 40 suites, encircled by 240 two- and threebedroom resort units and 70 villas, 10 hillside houses and 12 lakeside units.

The resort units will be capable of accommodating 1500 guests, whom it is anticipated will take many of their meals in the main hotel.

The development plans also include a 350seat conference centre, an Audubon-designed golf course and a sports club.
