With a view to improving the skills base and providing jobs for young people in the building industry, the Master Builders Association of the Western Cape (MBAWC) has announced that it will be providing school leavers with the opportunity to enter the industry, obtain a trade certificate and gain employment.

MBAWC Executive Director, Rob Johnson, explains, "In previous years we have concentrated our annual bursary funding on tertiary education but this year we will be spending a considerable amount on practical vocational training in order to build a pool of skilled and experienced future industry leaders and potential Master Builder members."

"This is a wonderful opportunity for matriculants, seeking careers in the building industry, to gain immediate employment in 2013 and 'earn as they learn'. These young people will be employed and indentured by the MBA in trade categories that best suit their potential, based on assessments prior to their employment."

"Providing young people with both practical experience and training is essential in helping to pave the way for their individual career paths- be they construction management or owning their own businesses."

Higher Education and Training Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, recently stated that "It is essential that employers in both the public and private sectors become involved in providing training spaces to young trainees – either as apprentices, learners or interns. Workplace experience is not only important as a means of learning and honing practical skills; it is also essential in order to prepare young people for life in the workplace...Research has shown that those with some workplace experience find it easier to find and to keep jobs."
