The construction contract for Transnet's new administration building and accompanying facilities at Coega's Port of Ngqura has been completed by Grinaker-LTA, a subsidiary of the JSE-listed Aveng Group

Leon PetrieThis was the first major building project undertaken at the Port, notes Leon Petrie, Grinaker-LTA Building's Eastern Cape general manager. The contractor is still busy with a second contract here, for a new hauler yard and associated facilities, he states.

Grinaker-LTA started work at the Port of Ngqura in March last year, and Petrie says his teams have faced the challenge of an extremely tight programme, to ensure the facilities are ready before the first ship docks.

Transnet’s new main administration building comprises a five-level reinforced concrete structure with predominantly curtain wall facades. The two additional structures that formed part of the contract – the change house and mess hall - are single storey reinforced concrete structures with brick cladding.

Grinaker-LTA's second contract for Transnet at the Port consists of a new “hauler zone” and associated “phase 1” buildings. Work on this started in August 2008 and ran partly concurrently with the first contract awarded, Petrie explains. “The scope of our latest contract includes Transnet’s main port entrance plaza, new container terminal entrance facility, hauler zone workshop buildings and sundry ablutions and office facilities around the port. The contract has sectional completion dates for various parts of the works. The first section, the phase 1 buildings, is 99% complete and we are currently busy with final snagging and handover, which is going well,” Petrie reports.

The contractor's commitment to safety is reflected in the safety achievements that the site has attained. Petrie elaborates: “The hauler zone and phase 1 buildings site won the regional MBSA (Master Builders South Africa) Safety Competition and is currently in the running for an award in the MBSA National Safety Competition, in the category for projects valued between R120 and R200 million.”

He says that the second and final section of Grinaker-LTA's current contract at the Port of Ngqura - the hauler zone - is currently moving ahead very well and is scheduled for completion mid-September 2009. “Additional works to the contract will see the contract value increase by an estimated 30%, which has contributed to the additional time on the contract,” he explains.

Major challenges for Grinaker-LTA in its work at the port have included working with the NEC contract and client Transnet’s high quality, health and safety standards. Petrie says, however, that Grinaker-LTA has risen to the challenges, and the experience gleaned on these contracts will add significant value to its offerings in future. “There is no doubt that from what has been learnt on this project, we will be very well-placed to manage health and safety on future projects. The sites have been extremely committed to meeting the client's requirements, regardless of additional work and manhours necessary. We all look forward to when the port 'goes live'. The harbour is expected to be fully functional in October 2009,” he concludes.
