The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) has received an excellent response to the Green Star SA PILOT rating tool
“The public comment period closed on 1 September and we have received just over 200 feedback comments from 29 different respondents with comments and suggestions”, says Nicola Douglas, CEO of the GBCSA.
“Much of the feedback related to the energy and water categories of the rating tool, and all comments will be assessed and debated at the September meeting of the Technical Working Group which developed the tool.”
Green Star SA is a voluntary green building rating system comprising eight categories including energy, water, materials, emissions, etc., in which a building’s environmental performance can be improved.  The tool sets out specific criteria (credits) in each category, and buildings are awarded points for the credits they meet.  The total number of points determines the building’s rating, which can be four, five or six star.
“We are very pleased with the response,” says Bruce Kerswill, Executive Chair of GBCSA.  “It shows the level of interest in green building ratings from the property industry, and helps to ensure that the tool properly addresses South Africa’s needs.”
The tool was based on Australia’s ‘Green Star’ system and customised for South African use by a team of local and international consultants and the Technical Working Group, a volunteer panel of 25 local experts.
The GBCSA’s Technical Manager, Jason Buch notes: “We have a big workload to get through in order to have a final version of the tool ready for launch at our conference in November.”
The GBCSA conference, to be held at the CTICC from 2 to 4 November, has a line up of 10 international speakers who are all leaders in different aspects of green building.
